So im just piddling around the other day at work on here, and suddenly this story idea comes to me while talking to my Froggy friend. There are however several kinks to be worked out.
Here is a brief and not so vivid overview:
Girl in highschool has secret, secret gets out, has breakdown. Theres more too it than that, but thats all im giving you.
Questions-
1) This secret she is hiding obviously must be devestating if ever found out. But it cant be something all crazy and totally wild. What I was leaning towards so far is she is either Bi or just straight out lesbian. This would create quite a stir in a regular school, but I just thought that perhaps I should stick her in a Catholic school... more drama. But other ideas are welcome. Just something that is very dramatic, that a few of her friends know (3-5) and possibly her brother. Something that would devestate her if found out, and her family and the school even, or atleast have the school in an uproar.
2) Debating on what grade/age she should be. Either she's fairly young (Sophmore) or a Senior. Whatever would work better. Opinions?
3)Since I just created another one, what kind of school should she be attending? Public, Private, Boarding, Catholic?
4) This is a big question, once we figure out what her secret is, we need to figure out how it comes into the open. The key here is that she must be betrayed by her friends.
Thanks!

I like the idea of making her lesbian in a Christian school, but I don't think Catholics are strict enough to make that such a BIG deal ... try Lutheran or something EXTREMELY conservative. Although if you want a boarding school, which would make it totally awesome, you'd almost have to go Catholic. Her parents would have to be some of the most strict people in the church ... her father being the priest would add a lot. I think she should also be about Sophmore level. The younger, the more devastating, but you wouldn't want to go with Freshman. There tends to be a bit more drama among the younger high schoolers than the older ones ... at least in my experience.

I agree with Isilwen, I think if she was younger, it would create more of a stir.
I would make her go to a Private Girls only boarding school, definitely a strict one of some sort of Christianic faith. This is only generalising, there are loadsa lovely people/girls who go to boarding school, but because you are away from most adults, and surrounded by girls, alot of them are bitchy, and yeah...
Sorry I can't think of much more

Thank you! So now we just need to figure out how her secret gets out. Another idea I had was she possibly had a girlfriend there, and they had to keep it very secretive and in order to save her own butt, her girlfriend rats on her and acts like she's not that way. But how would her friends be involved?

Why not just something obvious, like a diary. She doesn't write straight out that she prefers same sex, but she makes really obvious hints like, I feel so and so towars so and so but etc. She leaves it in a really careless place, and one of her friends reads it....
Perhaps?

that would work, but most of the high school girls I know prefer to pass notes instead of write in a diary. she could be passing notes in the hallway between classes, and another friend finds the notes and shares them around the school ... it's happened to me before, though not over anything like that. Lots of high school girls use friends as "diaries" and notes end up in the wrong hands quite often.

I agree that it should be something simple. Perhaps she could be caught in a compromising situation, like in the act of kissing another girl or something.
If her sexuality is the main theme of the story, then perhaps boarding school is the best option. She's away from home, probably sharing close quarters with other girls. Any necessary plot devices will be readily available to you.
I think boarding schools are overdone, though, and you can achieve the same result with a school close to home with strong, conventional religious beliefs.
I also agree that her parents could be aggresive in their religious beliefs as well. That way, no matter whether she's in school or at home, she's surrounded by people with overly-fundamental values that she knows won't take to her homosexuality. Furthermore, when her secret is blown, there will be no escape from the repercussions. Were she in a boarding school, she could always be yanked out and taken home. But if she is in her own community when she is found out, there's nowhere left to turn. Definite breakdown material.

The boarding school could be in her home town though. It's not always real common for that to happen, but it could. Then she still wouldn't have anywhere to turn. Another possibility is that her parents could be the heads of this boarding school because they generally would live at the school then, too. Then she would have grown up in the setting, and she wouldn't know any other community, causing the lack of other places to turn.

It's on the borderline of improbable, but its plausible enough to work.

Thank you all so much. This helps me so much. I love the diary issue. Obvious, yes, but maybe we can tweek it. That would be a good way for her friends to find out, and then the backstabbing to begin.

It's on the borderline of improbable, but its plausible enough to work. my cousin goes to an all girl's boarding school and she lives bout 20 mins away as do a few of the other girls there. quite common really. and I wouldn't say diary. We all know how girls fall out with each other on a regularly basis and in an attempt to get back at this girl, her friend makes a malicious hint to one of the year's "cool" gang. spreads fast. outcast of the "cool" group therefore no-one wants to talk to her besides being a lesbian.... my thoughts.

Good point, shmuggles. The "hint" would be a very good way to get it out there. I disagree with the use of a diary as well. It's not very common for a teenage girl to still use a diary ... at least the teenage girls I know don't use diaries.

What I was leaning towards so far is she is either Bi or just straight out lesbian. This would create quite a stir in a regular school, but I just thought that perhaps I should stick her in a Catholic school... more drama. It would create a stir? It's only sexual preference... My vote: Catholic School Pregnant, planning on getting an abortion

The key here is that she must be betrayed by her friends. 1) I like the idea of bisexual more than lesbian, simply because it is far more misunderstood than homesexuality. However, even in a Catholic School thatwould not create so much of an uproar. Maybe she DID something? Like...slept with a married teacher that is an in the closet lesbian? Something to that extent? That's the kind of thing that ruins lives. 2) I think she should be a well known senior that will only let certain people into her life. Maybe she's beautiful, and every guy wants her and every girl wants to be her, but she is very private. She keeps her friends close and everyone else as far from her as possible. 3) Catholic School would work. 4) So..if you go with the teacher relationship, maybe one of her fiends catches them...or the husband, or whatever. If you don't like that idea, maybe she falls in love with a friend and then confides in her, only to be betrayed. Anything sound good so far? --Phoenix
