Which it is definitely not, and what "common consent" are you talking about, John?

Seriously. If he is suggesting that our music is crap cuz its not classical, then that's totally biased. I wonder if he's even heard any of my tracks or anyone elses to make that assumption.
Classical is good music to many people, ill agree. even tho it isnt exactly my preferred genre, i at least respect it. Modern music can spark the same amount of emotional response as classical. Plus im sure you wouldnt enjoy it if i called your music crap without even listening to it.

john, you criticize things without knowledge of what you are criticizing. how would you like it if i called all your writing crap without reading it? the music i make comes from the soul, i put my heart into every piece i compose. thanks for insulting it.
i listen to jazz and i suspect you think that's crap? jazz is a true american art form and was born and raised in america. now if art is something you look for in music, then you clearly missed this aspect

I don't think that would incourage him - from what I gather, he's not a huge fan of America either. John, classical music is fine, but it's so . . . limited. There's only so much of it. You have to branch out.

classical music. an effort to get back to structure. the renaissance branched out into two forms, structure and beauty. classical being structure. as much as i love classical music and devote the whole of my saturdays to it, studying at the royal scottish academy of music and drama, classical is not the only thing out there. I play in the orchstra, a scottish folk group, a bigband and a brass band. I love my classical music and love playing it, but I love baroque, romantic, impressionist and alot of renaissance and pre renaissance music. I love folk music from all corners of the world. I love jazz, scottish, english traditional pieces, ghananian drum music, indonesian gamelan the whole flipping lot. You should not resptrict yourself to classical. besides, the moden nationalists movement evolved from the classical period. it led to whole tone, tone row and then onto blues sclaes, forming the essence of jazz. Hans Zimmer is possibly the greatest movie score writer ever to live, I'll even say better than john williams! and hans is still writing. Pirates of the carribean and gladiator are his two greatest in my opinion. granted there is music out there which i do not like or agree with but i can appreciate the qualities it has. that is a skill and a necessity to listening to music. I hope for your sake you learn to understand what I'm saying at somepoint in the near future...

I love how I can spark so much conversation with one little enormous criticism! And if I consider your soul-inspired music crap, then so be it.

They were, but they don't bitch about it like you people do nowadays. When ever I criticize modern music in favor of classical I hear "but classical music's got no soul". FALSE. La Traviata's finale can kick the crap out of any other vocal piece (of any genre), with the possible exception of Beethoven's Choral Symphony and Verdi Requiem.
It goes as follows:
Violetta rises from her bed (where she has been bedridden for the past few days because of her terrible illness): How strange! The spasms of pain have ceased: a strange new vigour has brought me to life! Ah! I shall live— Oh, joy!
She falls crumples, dead, onto the floor.
^Now that's emotional. It's absolutely brilliant. Verdi was a genius.
