If you have ever read Dune, or any of its sequels, Frank Herbert provides an excellent example of ancient fighting in a post-modern setting.
He accomplishes it through the introduction of shield technology. It's quite logical really, a high-energy personal shield would block anything traveling at a high velocity (i.e. a bullet) from impact. A sword or knife, however, being forced in at a low velocity and having a lower energy threshold, can pass through. Energy weapons are not used on shields, becasue it causes a nuclear reaction that obliterates both the attacker and defender.
I think something along those lines (without plagerizing) would be an excellent solution. Simple, logical, and fun.
