The story's there. I think I have a good enough idea. The thinking's done. But something's wrong. I just can't this feeling like I'm plagiarising since my story seems to look a lot like the one I got the idea from. So my problem is... How do you come up with something unique when you don't want to change the idea? It just feels like all the good stories have already been taken and originality is something very hard to come by nowadays... Any ideas? ;D

I heard that the worst thing to do if you want to write originally is to pressure yourself into being original. You must set out to tell the story you want to tell, and more importantly, to express the truth you want to express (in the guise of entertainment).
If I heard what your story idea and what it is inspired by are, I could further direct you. Maybe I will say your idea is original after all.
There are only so many stories, but it is nuances and creations within established possible plots which create the range of books (and the rain continues to fall) that we see in a library.
