You probably know that I write science fiction and fantasy. A recent critic told me that I should not do what I like to do, which is introduce a story or novel with a scene in which not everything is explained. You are not sure what sort of world you have found yourself in, although what is happening with the characters is clear. The critic says this is detrimental to enjoyment. I, though, cite Star Wars--the opening scene with the space battle enthralled moviegoers, even though they did not know what the galaxy of the movie was like, or what the ships were called.
Do you prefer to enter a fantasy world with little initial explanation, or to have a firmer grip on the overarching setting?
