(One of the first things I ever posted on the guild, so here it is.)
Let's see... I had this post all planned out, but I think I forgot most of it.
Anyway, first tip: When you think of an idea, grab a pencil and paper and write it down. Think about it and elaborate, making sure you write everyhing that pops in your head, even if it seems silly. I've written up to five pages of that kind of rambling for stories before.
Second tip: Always keep a notebook and writing utensil with you for sudden inspirations.
Third tip: Pay attention to any grammar, spelling, or punctuation rules you hear so you don't sound like an idiot.
Fourth tip: Even if something sounds totally ridiculous, go with it.
Fifth tip: Don't ask people close to you how your work sounds as they will probably lie and be no help whatsoever. Instead, ask an experienced person that isn't very close to you because they are more likely to give you tips and tell the truth.
Sixth tip: After writing something, don't reread it right away. After it's been on paper (or your hard drive) for a month or so, go over it. That way it's not fresh on your mind, and you are more likely to correct things that don't sound quite right.
I had more tips than that, but my loud rock music blasted the rest out of my brain. Hehe. Anyway, hope I could be of some help. I'll be sure to update if I remember any more.

New tips -
4-1-04 Seventh tip: Never erase. Always mark things out and rewrite them, just in case you want to change it back to the way it was or explore your options.
