this is something i wrote in response to the earthquake that shook pakistan last yr and caused so many ppl to die. it's not the only thing i've written for it... bt at the moment, that wound is still too raw for me to post anything else that i have written.
it's only half done, i haven't edited it or anything so bare with me. read, review, crisise- jst basically tell me what u think
Charecters:
Family-
Rehana- 16, oldest of three, main charecter
Shazia- 36, mother
Jaaved- 42, father
Ali- 12, younger brother
Fiza- 10, younger sister
Minahil- 15, cousin/friend to Rehana
Friends-
Sira- 16, best friend
Noor- 15, excited about 16 birthday (a week after earthquake)
Scene one
The stage is dark. You can hear shuffling, crying and wailing. The light turns on gradually. No one can ever see her face, the girl standing in the rubble, picking her way through the rubble apparently looking for people. She stops suddenly, amd goes to her knees, you hear her say:
The… kitchen…
She freezes and the light turns off her, and lights up the stage next to her.
Scene two
Rehana and Shazia are in the kitchen together talking, and laughing. Fiza runs in and hides her face in her mothers clothes, on her knees as if she’s hiding.
Shazia:
Hey, khaysteh, what’s wrong.
Fiza:
mumbles inaudbly into Shazia’s clothes.
Rehana:
Fiza, we can’t hear you, talk up yaar.
Fiza:
she looks up at Rehana who starts laughing and hold her arms out to her. Fiza comes over to her. Ali was being mean. He took Khadija, and hide her. I want her back.
Rehana:
she frowns, puts her hands on her hips. That’s not fair. Where is he?
Fiza:
happily I’ll get him! she runs out.
Shazia:
You always sort out their arguements. You’ll make a very good mother when it comes to it.
Rehana:
laughing slightly, looking down as if embaressed. I learned from the best, mama.
Scene three
The light turns off from that scene and turns on the rubble. Rehana gets up, sniffs, swollows, and turns around to some where else. She picks her way through the rubble. Something seems to catch her eye, and she bends down to pick it up. She holds it up to the light, it’s a small areoplane. She sobs suddenly and holds it to herself. Light turns off on her, light turns on the other side of the stage.
Scene four
Rehana is younger (tweleve), and she is playing with Ali. They both have areoplanes and they’re running around, crazily, making areoplane sounds. The zoom close to ach other making them crash into each other and fall backwards.
Rehana:
Ooopsies. she giggles.
Ali:
Worriedly Are you ok api? I didnt mean to!
Rehana:
Hugs him tightly. No, silly. I’m fine! C’mon, Ali, we need to get these planes to land in Karachii before dinner time.
Laughing they get up and start zooming around again. the light on them fades.
Scene five
Rehana sighs deeply and starts looking again, this time she’s more slow, like she doesn’t expect to find anything, or anyone. She steps on something that make a crunching noise. She gasps, and bends down to pick it up. She holds it up to see a pair of now broken glasses. Her voice is in a whisper:
Baba
The light on her turns off.
Scene Six
As the light turns on, Jaaved walks on stage looking very tired. Rehana and her friends are talking. Rehana looks up to see him.
Rehana:
BABA!
She runs up and hugs him. He catches her laughing, and bends down to kiss her head.
Jaaved:
Asalamwulakum to you too, Rehana.
Rehana:
excitedly, leaning back slightly out of his hug Did you have a good trip? How was it? Do anything interesting? Hows-
Jaaved starts laughing, and ruffles Rehana’s hair. Her friends giggle slightly too. Rehana turns to her friends with an arm still around her fathers waist.
Jaaved:
friendly, Asalamwualaykum, girls.
Sira:
Walaykum asalam, uncle.
Noor:
Respectfully, but she has cheeky grin on her face Walaykum asalam, uncle, did you get us anything?
Jaaved:
laughing slightly I’ve missed you girls.
Noor:
We missed you too! she pauses slightly. But really, Jaaved uncle, did you get us anything?
Jaaved:
rolls his eyes We’ll see, won’t we Noor. he turns to Sira. You’re the most mature of the group Sira, I don’t understand how you can keep up with them.
Sira:
Maybe it’s because I can be evil too, uncle Jaaved.
Jaaved:
Some how, Sira beetah, I can’t see that.
Rehana:
mysteriously You really don’t know us that well do you, baba.
Jaaved:
I’ve known all you girls all your lives I think I would. Now, where’s you’re mother.
off stage Shazia calls out:
Jaaved? Is that you?!
Jaaved:
Shazia! Where are you?
Shazia:
Kitchen, jaan.
Jaaved kisses each of the girl’s on their foreheads and walks off stage towards Shazia’s voice. The light fades.
Scene Seven
She starts looking fore frantically, like her life depends on it. Her breath is coming int short gasps, like she’s sobbing. Then she sits down suddenly, like she can’t take it any more, sobbing her heart out. She looks up, as if she’s beseeching to God.
Rehana:
loud angry voice Why? Why us? What did we do?
She hangs her head amd her shoulders shake. The light starts to fade on her.
Scene eight
Light fades onto the house part of the stage. Rehana is sitting in her room, staring at a picture in her hand. She looks as if she’s in a day dream. Her little brother and sister run into the room, and pull on her arm making her sit up up ad look at them.
Ali:
Api… are you ok?
Rehana:
Yeah… I’m fine she smiles at them just thinking.
Fiza:
Is that going to be our new brother?
Rehana:
Probably, if our ama and baba and his ama and baba agree on things.
Ali:
Oh, right. Noor and Sira are here by the way, they’re talking to baba at the moment, they’ll be here soon.
Rehana:
Ok, thanks.
Fiza hugs Rehana and runs out. Ali just turns to leave.
Rehana:
Where’s my hug? she looks sad he rolls his eyes and comes over to hug her. She hugs him back, grinning. Then he walks out shaking his head. She just smiles. She settles on her bed, and Sira and Noor walk in.
