Can you believe it?! ANGIE is posting a poem. ANGIE is POSTING a POEM.
So here's the deal with this. . . Today my Spanish teacher told us to write a poem (of any type or length) in Spanish, and my mind drew a blank, so since she said she would be the only one to read them, I decided to make a certain guy my subject (I won't go into all the boring details about him - let's just say Ash has had to put up with a lot of stories about him these past few months ). I might have exaggerated a few things for artistic purposes (Ash might understand this, as she knows the stories behind all of these lines), but I still like this poem a lot (mostly because of the subject ;D ). I wrote it in English first, while keeping in mind how it might translate (that's why it might sound kind of awkward at places), and I'm in the middle of translating it right now (and it won't be a direct translation because it might sound better one way or another when I try to put it into Spanish, of course), so here it is. The first one is how I originally wrote it; the second one is how I translated it into Spanish and did some very minor revisions to it; the third one is a direct re-translation of my Spanish translation. (And please don't critique my Spanish; I know I'm not fluent. I just posted the Spanish version for your curiosity and so you could see how it changes with the translations. )
Original English, no revisions or editing:
(Originally Untitled)
Your smile makes me smile,
And my smile does the same (to you).
A story, a look, a touch on the cheek,
You do anything for my smile. . .
You say I smile too much.
It's not always so easy to smile every day,
But the days when I don't smile
Are worse because your happiness
Disappears those days, too.
When one cries, so does the other,
But soon we both smile
Because we are together.
I treasure our friendship
More than you can know.
You give me your smiles,
And you give me mine,
But I want more than your smile.
In Spanish:
Momentos de Sonrisas
Tu sonrisa me causa sonreír,
Y mi sonrisa hace el mismo a tí.
Un cuento, una mirada, un rozado en la mejilla,
Haces cualquier cosa, sólo para mi sonrisa. . .
Dices que sonrío demasiado.
No es siempre fácil a sonreír,
Pero los días cuando no puedo,
Esos días son peores,
Porque tu felicidad y tu sonrisa
Están ausente esos días, también.
Cuando uno llora, el otro llora,
Pero pronto ambos sonreímos
Porque estamos juntos.
Aprecio nuestra amistad
Más que puedes saber.
Me das tu sonrisas,
Y me das mías. . .
Pero quiero más que sonrisas.
Direct translation from Spanish version into English:
Moments of Smiles
Your smile causes me to smile,
And my smile does the same to you.
A story, a look, a brush on the cheek,
You do anything, just for my smile. . .
You say I smile too much.
It's not always easy to smile,
But the days when I can't,
Those days are worse,
Because your happiness and your smile
Are absent those days, too.
When one cries, the other cries,
But soon we both smile
Because we are together.
I cherish/appreciate our friendship
More than you can know.
You give me your smiles,
And you give me mine. . .
But I want more than smiles.
