(ive given this a rating of 13 because theres a bit of violence at the end) I really do not know what to call this piece I am juggling about with titles.
Joey's Destiny (The Making of Raphael)
"Charming month we are having do you not think?" Joey said to his little brother as he opened the window shutters of his brothers small house. He only got to come visit his brother about once a month because he was a very busy person. His brother Jimmy lived by the sea. Joey loved the sea. Visits to his brother's house were always special.
"Very," said Jimmy sounding very distant. Joey waved a hand in front of Jimmy's eyes to try and get him to come back to reality. "What?"Jimmy sighed.
"You are daydreaming. Snap out of it," laughed Joey.
Joey saw Jimmy looking longingly at his staff. The staff with the purple orb on top of it. He was a Sorcerer, a very powerful good Sorcerer. Not to mention young. He was only twenty one and had learned alot about sorcery already. Sorcerer had always been in his blood. Jimmy did not possess any qualities that were linked to being able to cast charms magic or curses. Not that he ever cast curses on good people. They were for evil creatures only, like Trolls.
"Do something magical Joey," said Jimmy hopefully.
Joey knew that one had been coming. He usually saved using his staff for serious situations, like battling against mean horrible people that hurt good innocent people for nothing. Or helping someone in a tight spot. He supposed one simple incantation would cause no harm. He muttered a few words Jimmy could not understand and a light blue beam of light shot out of the orb of his staff. It zapped over to a goblet set on a small wooden table. The blue light hovered over the goblet for a moment then slowly fell into the goblet as clear cool water. Jimmy was gorping at him open mouthed. "Wish I could do that," Jimmy gasped after a few seconds of staring. Joey laughed in amusement then went to wards the door. He would like to go take a closer look at the sea. Jimmy followed him out his eyes still on the goblet.
The ocean was just as he had left it. A vast never ending moving blue oasis. The biggest oasis of them all. Jimmy did not know how good he had got it living by the ocean. Jimmy did not have to worry about saving the world and the consequences of his actions. He would give anything to be as carefree as that, even give up his sorcery. That was something he would never do. He had responsibility even if he did not want it. As they walked along the beach he looked down at the sand. The tide washed in some ugly things. Mainly dead wading birds and drifting wood. He walked a little further and saw something that was not so ugly. At least he did not think it was. Hard to tell with all the sand stuck to it. He bent down and picked it up, brushing wet sand off of it.
"That is a pretty trinket," smiled Joey holding what looked like a very grand bracelet up to the light. If he was not mistaken it was made from a band of pure gold and had shiny emeralds layed into it.
"I don't like it," said Jimmy.
"What is not to like?" Joey asked giving the bracelet a wipe with his aqua blue cloak. It gleamed strongly after he had given it a wipe.
"It's shining funny. Weird how it does that after being in the salt water for so long," said Jimmy.
"That is because I just this second wiped it," said Joey admiring the bracelet for a moment before slipping it onto his wrist.
"You know best," said Jimmy grinning.
Joey admired the bracelet one last time then simply carried on with his walking. He thought it looked rather charming sat on his wrist. After their walk they went into the villages local tavern. Where Joey brought himself and his brother something to eat. Jimmy did not earn all that much so he liked treating him when he could. Being a Sorcerer he earned alot of gold coins. He was paid by a King and Queen he worked for every time he helped them with one of their battles. Not that he helped the good people of this world for the money, that was just a bonus. He would still carry on doing his magic for good even if he was not paid a single silver coin. Being a Sorcerer was a gift one he intended to use in good will and judgment.
The two of them stayed in the quiet tavern most of the night. This tavern never got too raudy or rough. It was a relaxing place to go and chill out. Play a game of cards if you wanted or even have a go at playing an old wooden piano that was sat in a corner looking very much at home with cobwebs clinging hold of it. People drifted in after a hard days work and back out again when ever it suited them. Joey and Jimmy were not suited until closing time. Joey was forced to tell Jimmy about his adventures which had occurred in the last three months. That was a lot to go through and took several beers and a long time to get through. Joey was still talking when the bar tender threw them out for the night. Well that was a lie he only had to ask and they supped up and went back to Jimmy's little house.
Joey sat on a small bed in the tiny guest room of his brothers house. He muttered a few words to his staff and it lit up. Spraying purple light all around the room. He looked at the bracelet on his hand then tried to take it off. There was no point in sleeping in it. He would prefer to put it on the bedside table. That was weird were the jewels within the bracelet supposed to be emerald? He was sure he had just seen them glow purple. That was daft. It was the light from his staff making them look purple. He let out a laugh and made to slip the bracelet from off his wrist. The bracelet did not come off. Figuring he was not trying hard enough he gave the bracelet a pull. Still it did not budge. Getting a slightly panicked he gave it a yank. Nothing. Tried again this time more vigorously. Nothing again well not exactly nothing. The bracelet had not moved from his arm and was adamant to go anywhere. It had clung to his wrist. The thing was gripping hold of him as though it had a life of it's own. The harder he pulled the worse it clung. The tighter the grip around his wrist. It was clamped to him stuck.
"Strange," Joey whispered trying not to be scared by the bracelet having a hold on him in that manner. He stopped pulling on the bracelet let it go and it unclamped and hung on his wrist like a normal bracelet. "Very strange," mustered Joey.
Well there was nothing he could do about the bracelet at that hour. In the morning he would try and work out what was with this bracelet not wanting to leave his arm. Find a library and read through some books. The library hardly ever failed to give him an answer. There was no point in panicking if he had no idea what the bracelet's intentions were. For all he knew this could be a good bracelet that could help him somehow. There were all sorts of possibilities not all of which were bad.
"Where you going so early? You've not even had breakfast," Jimmy called after Joey, as Joey proceeded briskly out the house as soon as daylight had creeped through the cracks in his window shutters.
"Just going to see if I can find out something about this bracelet," Joey called back.
"Why? Is something wrong?"
Jimmy sat in the house waiting for Joey to come back. He was waiting ages. Seconds turned to minutes, minutes past to hours and the hours dragged along. Day turned to night and still Joey was not back. Joey should be back by now. Judging by the position of the moon it was midnight. Maybe he should go find his brother. The library was bound to be closed by now. He really should have gone looking earlier. Something was not right, Joey never left without telling him. He was figuring Joey had left town either that or he had lost track of time. Jimmy got up to go search for his brother and find out why he had been so eager to get too the library.
"Faster Falcon," Joey shouted at his horse urging it on. Home he had to get home, sort out this mess he had gotten himself into. Dust kicked up from the ground. Frustrated he gave Falcon a savage kick, not like him at all. The horse bolted. Feeling guilty he stretched out a hand and stroked Falcon's unruly mane. Kicking his favourite horse was out of character. He always treat the animal with respect. It was not his fault. He did not want to.
As he rode evil thoughts ran through his head. He shook his head trying to block them. The bracelet gleamed purple as terrible thoughts invaded his mind. When he managed to block the bad wicked thoughts the bracelets jewels turned back to emerald. Now he knew what was wrong. He had found it out in a book at the library now it was confirmed; the bracelet was starting to control his good pure mind, poisoning it with evil. Whenever those jewels were purple the bracelet had control over him. Why had he put the damn thing on? Jimmy had been right, how he wished he had listened to Jimmy's opinion on the bracelet. Now he was stuck with it. He needed more information than that book had given, that was why he had to get home. Hopefully in his library he would find a book which was more precise and helpful. All he knew was what the bracelet did to him. He had no idea how to take it off. If he did not remove it the consequences would be fatal.
This was a race against time. As he darted through the trees in his forest on Falcon he thought evil things. Wanted to have a go at performing evil curses. He reached for his staff that he had shrunk, so it could fit in his pocket.
"No Joey," he muttered to himself giving his own hand a slap. If he started performing evil magic he would not stop. He had to keep control of his own actions for as long as possible.
As soon as his cottage was in sight he leaped off Falcon. The horse let out an angry snort and galloped off some place away from him. Probably to the river a couple of leagues away for a drink. Abuse to wards Falcon flew uncontrollably out of his mouth. Blood dribbled out of his lip through biting it so hard when he suddenly found himself. He was a fighter; had to beat the bracelet. Quickly he swept into the house and down some stone steps to his personal underground library and plowed through books. Books upon books about many magical devices. His heart jumped for joy when he saw his bracelet mentioned in one of the books. Halfway through reading joy turned to frustration, heart felt so heavy like a stone. What he had read he already knew. The book he'd read before had already told him all of this.
"Curse you damn book!" screamed Joey flinging it over his shoulder. It bounced off a wall landing open on the floor it's parchment pages rather tattered now. That had been the bracelet talking again; he never got that worked up. "Oh Joey calm yourself. Throwing won't help," Joey whispered soothingly to himself. What he needed was a brake. Some sleep maybe. Come back to finding an answer when he was rested up.
That he did. Only his sleep was not so peaceful. Would have nightmares about himself killing innocent people, messing up lives. Woke up sweating and sometimes shaking. Sleep certainly was not helping. If anything it was making the experience a hundred times more scary. Sorcerers' Sorceresses and Wizards' dreams usually had a meaning to them, sometimes even telling you the coarse of the future. This could be his fate if he did not act quickly.
Joey spent many days and nights in that library of his; reading books he had read over and over again. None of them of any help. All the while of being cooped up in that library and he was deteriorating getting worse all the time. That bracelet was poisoning his mind and controlling it got harder and more trying every second of every day. After a week of this Joey could cope no more. The evil feelings were starting to please him. He liked it when a rush of anger flew through him and enjoyed it when he came across an evil curse in one of his books. This was stupid he would never find what he was looking for. Maybe he did not want to even find it anymore.
"Ditch the book it means nothing. No I can not these evil thoughts are not right. The bracelet can not control me I am my own person," Joey murmured. He shook his head and laughed the bracelet glowed a bright purple. "Books what use are books when it is stuck to me.I may as well be what it wants me to be," smiled Joey.
This was getting all too much. He kept feeling evil then good. The different attitudes were floating through his mind and were merging together. Feeling the most frustrated he had ever done in his lifetime he strode over to one of the bookshelves. The books were not helping and sometimes he did not even want them to help. They were of no use to him at the moment. Furiously he tipped over the bookshelf, throwing it brutally to the floor. " You did not help me! I needed your help!" yelled Joey. Th bookshelf banged heavily to the floor and books fell out of it. Some of their pages getting damaged others braking under the weight of the heavy oak bookshelf. "That shall teach you. I hope you are happy," muttered Joey as he grabbed his staff which was propped up against a wall on his way out the library. He was done with books to a certain extent. Maybe one day they would come in useful. Not then. Not now. Nothing could possibly help him now.
Feeling bored went outside and held up his staff to a nearby tree. Should he or shouldn't he? It would be great giving the tree a blast for the fun of it. He did; muttered a few words in the ancient tongue and turned the tree into a fiery whirlwind after a few seconds the fire faded and where the tree had been stood was a pile of ash. Perfect. These evil spells were not so difficult. Not if your mind was up to it. He aimed at another tree then drew back. This was madness. It had to stop.
"Put it down stop. You are better than this. It is only a meager bracelet," Joey said the power it had on him was far too strong. That was the last time he remembered thinking good thoughts. Next thing he knew he was going over to some dummies made from sacks of straw he used for practicing magic on, when at them he practiced a magic on them he had never in his life used before. The bracelet stuck on purple it would probably never see emerald again while on his wrist.
Joey sent dark magic flying everywhere. After two days of practicing he was getting really good at it. Could skillfully blow up the sack dummies and make them move wherever he wanted them to go. He had always been an extremely powerful Sorcerer, still a powerful Sorcerer now just one with different morals and standards. That morning he had been practicing his craft and was feeling like a short brake. Could go and see Falcon, he would always love Falcon no matter what. Horses in his opinion were gentle creatures.
"Sorry I was a mean Sorcerer Falcon. One just had to get used to things," smiled Joey giving his horses unruly mane a stroke. Falcon nuzzled him with it's nose. You could always rely on good old Falcon to be there for you. Halfway through stroking Falcon he heard footsteps on the ground approaching him. Visitors they better not be. Not that day, not any day.
"Joey is that you? Please don't say I am too late," Jimmy said keeping his distance from Joey. Kept taking steps back not sure whether to be afraid or not.
Joey kept stroking Falcon. Ran fingers gently over the velvety coat. "Late for what?" Joey half whispered.
"I came as soon as I found out. You left a book on the library table. I read it, know about your bracelet. It's corrupting you I can tell your hairs gone a white colour. It doesn't look right Joey," Jimmy mustered sounding a little timid.
"Joey such a useless name. I need something more powerful," said Joey.
"No Joey's great. Please be OK Joey," Jimmy shouted through being so scared at the thought of losing his brother to the bracelet. "You gotta take that bracelet off it's no good. It's making you go bad," said Jimmy trying to be calm but finding it extremely difficult.
"There is certainly nothing wrong with me. How dare you say such things," snapped Joey.
"I know how to take it off! I found your Wizard friend he told me a blood relative can take off that evil bracelet. That is the only way. Let me take it you off," Jimmy offered hopefully. Taking a step to-wards Joey.
Joey turned away from Falcon and faced Jimmy. Gave him a charming smile, one he'd always had even before putting on the bracelet. Jimmy let out a gasp seeing that Joey no longer had his own eyes they had gone an icy silver, one that disturbed him deeply. "What do you think of Raphael?" Joey asked. Jimmy gave him a blank look not knowing what he was going on about. "Yes Raphael seems more like a name for a Sorcerer," smiled Joey happily.
"No it's Joey!" shouted Jimmy grabbing hold of Joey's arm.
"I beg to differ. Now leave go of my arm," said Raphael. He tried to shake Jimmy from off his arm. It was not going to happen. Jimmy was adamant in removing that bracelet. Raphael supposed it would not hurt for him to take it off. In fact he was getting sick of the sight of it. So stopped trying to shake Jimmy off of him. Jimmy easily slipped the bracelet off his arm.
"There it is off. Please go back to normal now," Jimmy said throwing the bracelet to the floor as though it was diseased.
"But I am normal. Who are you to imply I am not?" Raphael said.
"I'm your brother Joey. Don't you leave me," yelled Jimmy.
"Do not shout at me in that tone," said Raphael clutching hold of his staff.
"You are so stupid I told you not to put it on!" Jimmy screamed at him
"I am not stupid. You can not call Sorcerer Raphael stupid you peasant low life," Raphael said in a raised voice.
"Please come back," whimpered Jimmy.
This was all too pathetic. Raphael was tired of Jimmy now. First there had been the shouting now the pleading. He felt fine well would do if this annoying man would go away and leave him in peace. Yes he was still whittling on, almost in tears. It was all very tedious. "Go away now," Raphael ordered.
"Not until you come back," sobbed Jimmy.
"This is your finale warning. Go now before I am forced to remove you," Raphael warned him. Jimmy did not move anywhere. Was still crying wanting him to be Joey. He was still Joey but not as Jimmy knew him. Jimmy would never be able to understand. This thought had him lose his temper. "Flammo icilia!" Raphael roared pointing his staff at Jimmy.
Jimmy let out a scream then burst to flames just like the tree had done a day or so ago. Raphael took a glance at the pile of ash on the floor. Gave a small tut and sort of wished he had not gone to those extremes. "You made me lose my temper. Maybe we shall cross paths again one day," Raphael whispered softly then gave his shoulders a shrug. What was done was done, he could not change his actions. They would never have worked out. The thought of this made him feel better about what he had just done.
Sorcerer Raphael was here. Joey would soon be a distant memory. In time he would forget his old life and never threat over it again. The bracelet had poisoned his mind and soul forever. There was no way that the damage could be undone. He was not pure evil nor was he any good. Good and evil had met to create unpredictable. So there he was living his unpredictable risky life. Not knowing what would be around the corner.
