Short piece that is definitely a scene in the ending sequence of a story I have the beginning of lying around here somewhere. It stands fairly well on its own, however.
-----------------------------------
Bryant came around a corner too fast and he felt the wheel slip a little beneath his hands. For a moment he let it slide and the car, if not the entire world, went into slow motion. His already blurred vision was now privy to a smear of lights as the car spun ninety degrees before Bryant finally took control again. The lights around him came into focus a little to the right of where they should have been and Bryant realized he had crossed the far lane and was speeding down the side of the road. Gravel and mud tore itself from beneath his tires as he corrected his course to the road itself and then to the right side.
"Mr. Daniels, you have been a good friend to me, but I'm afraid you've run out on me. Good-bye," Bryant spoke absently to the empty bottle in his hand as he rolled down the window to throw it out. There was a hollow thud as the bottle hit the ground without shattering and resigned to a ditch where it would wait, tragically whole, to be buried and forgotten.
"Fuck..." Bryant meant to weigh heavy words on the kinship he felt with the bottle but all he could compose was, "Fuck...that."
Ahead, at the top of a fast approaching hill, Bryant could see the eyes of a beast appear. They were glowing red and blazing at him through the fog. As he came closer he could see the beast sneer as his shining white teeth were revealed and the light from the fire of the beast's stomach shone over the hill as he opened his mouth wide.
Bryant gripped the wheel and set his jaw.
"Nothing can touch me. Let's see you try, bastard."
Bryant drove straight on to be devoured by the beast and it screeched and wailed as he gained speed. As he came closer, Bryant saw the fire rise from the beast's stomach and focus into two glowing white eyes of an angel.
"See the demon heave forth the angel of salvation..."
