CHAPTER ONE
Mya had never been ‘cool.’ She always had been the smart girl who people loved to make fun of and who had no love life. She was the kind of girl who loved to study and hated to party, the kind of girl who has zero confidence around boys and has never had a boyfriend. She always wanted a life filled with adventure and death defying experiences, but that would never happen. She goes to a school teeming with nerds, and of all the nerds, she is the biggest one. The saddest part is, even the nerds make fun of her.
People have always made fun of Mya, ever since kindergarten when she could read and write stories, and the only thing her fellow classmates could do is write the alphabet and spell their name. She got straight A’s throughout elementary school, being the only kid in her class to pass the difficult test that all of the other kids failed. The teachers loved her attitude toward school, and often singled her out from the rest of the students. People hated her because they were intimidated by her intelligence; therefore she had few friends and often stayed to herself. She was a beautiful girl with dark brown hair and big dark brown eyes, but no guy would dare ask out the nerd of the class, so she remained single.
She was a hard worker and spent most of her time studying while other children would normally be on the computer or watching television, and she stayed the same way through college. While other people were out partying, she’d be up late studying. She had a job on the side as a waitress, and the manager would always comment on her friendlessness towards her customers, and how she always tried to make them feel as comfortable as possible.
While she did enjoy the wonderful compliments and the good grades she received, she was tired of her boring life. She was tired of not having a lot of friends because she didn’t socialize. She was tired of being Miss Perfect, and she wanted more adventure in her life. She wanted to live on the wild side, and she wanted to be though of as ‘cool.’
It was a Monday morning, perhaps one of the most important days of the week. Monday was normally the day when her professors would start a new lesson that would continue throughout the whole week, and if you missed the beginning of this lesson, then you would have no clue what was going on the entire week. Nobody missed a Monday, including the slackers, and Mya decided that this was the perfect opportunity for her to break out of her shell. She could catch up if she spent a couple hours of studying every night. Her roommates always teased her for being Miss Goody Two Shoes, and quite frankly she was sick and tired of it. She woke up that morning to find her roommates still sound asleep in their beds. She turned on the light, waking them all up. They all moaned and yelled at her to turn it off.
“No, now listen. We’ve been working our tails off all year, and I say that we go to the mall today. I hear there’s a sale today at Macy’s.” Her roommates all looked at each other, then her, and then burst out laughing.
“Are you serious? You miss a Monday? Nobody misses Mondays!” said Abby.
“Well today I am, and unless you guys are scared of missing a day of school, then I would like you to tag along with me.” Mya said with a smile.
“Us? Scared? Like you should talk! We’ll go shopping with you today.” Abby said as she narrowed her eyes, trying to see if Mya was lying or not. “But first we have to call in sick. You can do that for us. We’ll leave around ten, so until then, I’m going back to sleep.” Abby climbed out of bed, flicked the light switch, and pulled the sheets over her head.
They want me to call in sick? Mya thought. I’ve never played hooky before, why would they want me to lie for them? Then again, maybe they want me to call in sick, because they would believe me. I only miss school when I’m deathly ill. Mya made her way towards the phone, picked it up and called the main office.
“Hello this is Mrs. Reynolds from the main office at Fisher University, how may I help you?” asked a lady on the other end. Mya froze. She didn’t know what to say. “Hello? Hello?”
“Yes, sorry. This is Mya Devlin. I’m just calling to let you know that Abigail Richards, Alana Kennedy, Dana Patrick, and I will not be in school today because we ate some rancid food last night and now we have food poisoning.” Mya added in a cough to make her story sound more convincing.
“Oh, well I’m sorry to hear that Miss Devlin. Will you be picking up your work later?”
“Um…No, no, we all feel terrible. I don’t think we’ll be able to.”
“Alright, then we’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Goodbye.” Mya couldn’t believe that she had just pulled that off. She had never lied to an official in her life, and it felt good. So this is what it was like to live on the wild side. She liked it.
Mya had gone back to sleep, and when she looked at the clock it read 7:30 am. Waking up at seven-thirty was much more refreshing than waking up at four-thirty. She took a nice, long hot shower, not having to worry about her roommates. They wouldn’t be up for another hour or so. She slipped on her underwear and opened the closet door. She looked around at her closet. She didn’t like her clothes. They were too bland. She decided that she would buy a lot of new clothes with the tip money she had gotten from waiting tables last night. She would get one of those denim mini skirts and a cute top. Maybe then boys would notice her more. Before she knew what was going on, she was sucked into her closet. The door slammed shut behind her. Her eyes stung from air that hit her face as she felt herself speed through nothingness. She screamed as she felt herself fall down and down what felt like thousands of feet. She finally smacked down onto the floor, but it was a much lighter landing than she had expected.
She slowly got up to find a group of people around her. She looked around to find nothing but open water. She stared at the different faces, not recognizing one of them. They were all dressed in dirty, ripped clothing, and were sweaty from the sun’s hot rays. All the men were looking at her smiling, something she wasn’t accustomed to, and then she glanced down at herself, to find that she wasn’t wearing anything but her underwear. She let out a shriek and then tried to cover herself with her arms.
“Where am I?” she asked as she glanced at them.
“Why you’re aboard the mighty Chancellor.” one of the men said.
“Don’t tell her where we are! She could be one of them for all we know!” a woman said.
“One of who?” Mya asked.
“I don’t think she knows who we’re even taking about!” the man said again.
“What’s The Chancellor?”
“You’re standing on it right now!” the man said. Mya looked around until she finally realized that she was on a ship in the middle of the ocean. It wasn’t like most ships. It was made of a stronger metal and flew over the water rather than floated.
“I say that we let the commander question her, then we’ll know if we can trust her or not.” the woman said.
“Fine. Jake, go make yourself useful and go get him.” the man said again as he pointed at a young man that looked around my age.
“Ay-yay sir!” Jake said as he made his way towards a door on the other side of the vast ship.
“And Jake?”
“Yes?”
“Never say that again.
“Er…yes sir.” he said as he began to flush. Mya stood there awkwardly for a few seconds as the rest of the people continued to stare at her.
“Beautiful day isn’t it?” she asked as she gave a fake laugh. Just then the doors burst open, and out of them came a tall, broad shouldered man with Jake tagging alone behind him. He had long dark brown hair and deep dark brown eyes. He walked with his head held high and no expression on his face until his eyes met Mya’s. His eyebrow’s lost their uniformity and his eyes lost their stiffness, but he quickly gained his martinet appearance again.
“Who are you?” he asked.
“Mya Devlin. And yourself?”
“Commander James. Now tell me, why are you on my ship?”
“I don’t know.”
“How do you not know? There must be a reason why you’re here.”
“I don’t know.” Commander James looked around and realized that they were drawing a lot of unwanted attention.
“What are you all looking at? Get back to work!” he shouted and they all quickly resumed what they were doing before Mya had crash-landed onto their ship. “Come with me.” he said as he motioned towards his quarters.
“Now,” he said as he shut the door behind him. “Why are you here?”
“I don’t know. I don’t know why I’m here and I don’t know how I got here. I was in my closet debating what outfit I should wear today when I was sucked into it and spat out here.” she said as her eyes began to tear up.
“Don’t cry,” he said as that soft complexion came over him again. “Look, I don’t know what to ---” then he stopped himself mid-sentence.
“You don’t know what to what?” Mya asked.
“Hm...” he said as he paced over to his desk and sat down in his chair across from her.
“You say you were sucked out of your closet, and suddenly you just so happened to end up on my ship?” he asked, not seeming to believe her.
“Yes, exactly. Look, I know it sounds crazy, but I’m telling you the truth.”
“It just sounds fishy…”
“Fishy? How is it fishy! I didn’t even get dressed, I mean look at me!” she said as she pointed at herself. He looked at her and smiled. “Now if you could please tell me what’s going on, I would really appreciate it.”
“You seem too angry and confused to be a spy, so I suppose you’re telling the truth. What you’re talking about is The Gateway.”
“The Gateway?”
“Yes, The Gateway. It’s a portal that opens twice every century. The government created it as a means of communicating with other dimensions, but scientists said it was too dangerous, so it was never used. If what you’re saying is true, then this means that the government went behind the peoples’ backs yet again.” Commander James said as he stood up. “It figures, those rotten politicians. They’ll do anything to get their way, even if it means endangering other peoples’ lives…”
“Commander James?” Mya asked.
“Those filthy, little---”
“James?”
“Sorry,” he said as he blushed. “And my name’s Christian.”
“But you said your name was Commander James.” Mya insisted.
“It is, but James is my last name.”
“Oh, so your name is Christian James?”
“Well, yes.”
“Nice to meet you,” Mya said with a smile. He stared into her eyes for a moment, nodded, and then looked away. Mya was confused. What had she done? “So when will I be able to go back home?” she asked.
“You won’t be unless this is the portal’s first time opening. If it is, then you’ll have to stay where you landed. The portal is said to only open in the same spot twice every century.”
“You mean I’m stuck here?”
“Only until it opens again.”
“Is this some kind of joke, because if it is, it’s not funny. I bet it’s those stupid popular girls again. You can come out now! If you wanted my homework this bad, you could have just asked me. I’ll even give it to you this time.”
“Mya this is no joke. You’re in the middle of the ocean on my ship.” Christian said. His serious expression stretched across his face, and Mya sighed. It’s times like these where I wish I had never wanted adventure in my life.
