Chapter 1: Two Friends
A cool breeze whistled through the trees as it swept over the dense forest, making the Willowwet's leaves shiver and rattle. Tree folk pushed further into their makeshift homes wanting to escape the cold. Tiny fairies yawned and stirred inside their nests when a hungry wolf let out a distant cry to the full moon. In hope that it'd bring him luck in finding a real meal.
A chill crept up Eioko's spine as she listened to the howl. She pushed her stringy orange hair from her eyes and whispered a small prayer to the heavens that the wolf would not devour her as his dinner. The breeze ruffled her torn skirt causing her to giggle as its icy touch tickled her legs.
"Having fun?" A soft yet stern voice asked behind her.
"Oh, Dreamer this is such a beautiful place." She giggled as turned to face her friend. She bowed her head respectfully to the lady and she bowed back.
"You've gotten bigger then when I last saw you." Dreamer mumbled more to herself. Eioko giggled and looked as if shocked.
"It's been five years, didn't think I'd be taller then an eight-year-old?" She joked. "What about you? You have changed many." She smiled sweetly and stared at Dreamer for a moment. She really did look different. Not only was she in her early twenties now, her figure was lovely and her face fine. Anyone would be able to notice even if Dreamer would not believe.
Eioko smiled again and looked to the gleaming stars. "So many..." She whispered as she watched a few fall through the sky. "Do you think they watch us?"
"What are you talking 'bout?" Dreamer asked. She leaned against a Willowwet tree and stared at the dark ground.
"The stars." She answered simply. "Do you think they watch everything we do? What if they are beings strung up in the sky by forgotten gods?"
She looked to her friend, but Dreamer only shrugged in reply. She sighed under her breath and unhooked her locket.
"Dreamer." She said and the lady looked up. "Why are you going to help me? Why do you believe my story of Cordanell when no one else does?"
"I'm not like everyone else." Dreamer scoffed.
"But don't you fear what they fear?" She continued, holding her locket tightly in her palm.
"What they fear is nonsense. They fear a foolish man that thinks he is king of all. They fear the very use of magic when this entire world is built upon it. No I don't fear what they fear." Dreamer answered.
Eioko sighed again, but this time with a hint of relief. She opened the locket and stared longingly at the picture inside. "I hope he is alright." She muttered gently. She closed it and hooked it back onto the silver chain around her neck.
"What is your real name?" She asked, trying to break the silence.
"None of your business." Dreamer said. She straightened from the tree and grinned before heading down the pebble path. The path led deeper into the forest but it was a shortcut to the sea-port Arixis.
"But I am your friend. So shouldn't I know?" Eioko asked as she caught up to Dreamer.
"Nope." Dreamer assured.
"But..." She trailed off as she tried to think of a reason. She grumbled in fustration and looked ahead. She hoped they'd reach Arixis soon.
What have I done?
What have I done?
How could I be so blind?
All is lost.
Where was I?
Spoiled all, spoiled all.
Everything has gone all wrong. –The Nightmare Before Christmas
Chapter 2: Shot
The dim flames inside lampposts flickered, eating away at the rotten colored candles. A peasant man sighed as he lit the last lamppost. He rubbed his eyes warily and stifled a yawn just before he sleepily made his way to his cozy home.
“You sure this will work?” A small boy whispered to his comrade. His magnificent dark skin blended him perfectly in the shadows of the alley where he hid from the lights of the lampposts.
“Of course.” The girl assured, a grin caressing her lips. Only her fiery red hair kept her from being hidden.
The boy’s face was still filled with fear and he pressed against the older girl. He gripped his pocketknife tightly causing his palms to sweat.
“You promise, Karia?” He asked. The girl glanced at him and nodded. She rubbed his shoulder and went back to staring at the lampposts. Each small flame sparked wildly making the boy flinch. Karia giggled to herself as the flames snapped and dispersed. Allowing the street to fill with darkness. Not even the full moon’s rays reached the place.
“Ready?” she asked the boy. He nodded slowly but fear was still visible in his eyes.
“Do we have to do this?” He asked before she could pull him into the dark street.
“Yes.” She sighed. “If we don’t the entire gang will starve. You don’t want that on your conscious do you?”
“But-“ Karia gripped his arm tightly and drug him into the dark void of a street before he could argue. They walked at a brisk pace glancing behind them every so often to make sure no one was following. The boy tripped but Karia hushed him when he tried to stutter a complaint. He sighed with relief when they reached a small shop.
“How are we going to get in?” He asked, staring wide eyed at the bars that blocked the door and side window.
Karia only smiled at him and placed her palm over the bars. For a moment it turned bright red under her fingers before melting. She recoiled as a hole formed.
“Your turn.” She said to boy and he swallowed the lump of fear in his throat. The irises of his almond shaped eyes turned black and he pressed against the hole. His body twisted and moved through the hole so he could push open the door. His slunk into the room and winced as he changed back to normal.
“Good job.” Karia called to him. He looked back at her and smiled meekly. “Now go to the back and get as much supplies as you can carry.” She ordered. He nodded his head rapidly and ran to the back. Karia wrapped her hands around the remaining bars and started to melt them. To her dislike it was a slow process.
She perked up when unfamiliar footsteps crept inside the room. She saw a figure move around in the darkness and a small ‘click’ broke the silence.
“Tynan!” Karia yelled and the boy spun on his heels. He was at the very back of the room. A light flashed on and he stared down the barrel of a shotgun.
Karia pulled her self through the hole and ignored the pain as the sharp edges cut into her side. “Tynan!” She yelled again making the figure turn his head. “Get away from there!”
The boy backed and tried to escape but the man pulled the trigger of the shotgun and the bullet struck the boy’s chest. Splattering blood on both himself and the floor as the boy collapsed.
Tears swelled in Karia’s eyes and the man turned so the gun faced her.
“Damn thieves.” He cursed readying the gun but before he could pull the trigger the shotgun exploded in his hands. Making him scream in pain and fear.
“Tynan…” She mumbled under her breath as fire danced on her fingertips. “I’m sorry.” Tears spilled down her cheeks and fire exploded inside the shop, eating greedily at everything it touched.
ummmm....yeah I know could've done better. all that stuff
I'll write out the rest of the chaps later...
