heres half of a short story i wrote yestaday [:
The Crimson Mace
The numbers on the clock changed to 10:00 PM. Slowly the passengers lights began to dim as they squirmed in their seats, trying to reach a comfortable position. Finally Lacey would get that thirty minute break that she desperately needed. She had been running up and down the aisles for the past three hours serving snacks, dinner, and drinks for the passengers. She leaned against the wall in the back of the plane where all the flight attendants were huddled. She was too exhausted to move.
“I can’t believe we still have another seven hours left of this flight,” Erica said as she poured some coffee for herself. “This has to be the longest flight of the year.”
It can’t be longer than that flight to Rome.” Tyler said with a grimace. Everyone frowned at this reminiscence. The whole flight had been a catastrophe. A woman had been sick with a virus and had to be quarantined in first class, and the passengers in first class had to be moved into coach which did not go over too well.
“This flight better not be as bad as Rome.” Lacey said as she poured herself a cup of coffee. The flight attendants all talked for a while. Lacey peered down at her watch to see what time it was. It read 10:44 PM. Her break was long over. She peeked out of the curtain that separated the flight attendants from the passengers. A quarter of the lights were out. Lacey patrolled the aisle to see if anyone needed assistance. Most of the lights that were out belonged to the elderly and the young children. A woman sat with her head buried in a romantic novel while her husband was entranced by the movie being shown. The woman yawned and stretched her arms high into the air, put her bookmark back into her book, set the book down on the small table in front of her, turned out her light and cuddled up to her husband. Her husband didn’t flinch as a large explosion occurred on the screen. The passengers usually started to fall asleep around 11:00 PM. The plane slowly began to quiet down. The man got up from his seat, letting her head smash into the armrest. She got up in shock, repositioned herself, and fell back asleep. He walked down the aisle towards Lacey.
“Excuse me,” he said as he gave her a dashing smile. He had the whitest teeth that she had ever seen. He made his way towards the bathroom and slammed the door. The elderly woman that had been sound asleep jumped ten feet into the air, rubbed her back, frowned, and placed her head against her pillow.
“Miss,” a man said who had been doing a crossword puzzle. “Would you mind getting me a glass of champagne?”
“Of course not,” Lacey said as she made her way to the back of the plane. She came back a few minutes later with the champagne that the man had requested.
“Here you are,” she said as she handed the man his drink.
“Thank you,” she nodded and then made her way to the back of the ship. She poured herself another glass of coffee and then glanced at her watch. It read 11:06 PM. She took a sip of her coffee as a loud shriek came from behind the curtain. She spilled the coffee all over her, cursed, and then yanked the curtain open.
“What’s going on?” She asked as she eyed the woman who had screamed. She had long blonde frizzy hair and she wore so much make up that it looked like she had gotten her face painted by a clown.
“Look,” she said as she whimpered. She pointed into the bathroom. Lacey hesitantly stepped towards the bathroom and looked into it. A woman was on the bathroom floor. Blood gushed from her forehead as her skull peered through her skin. She had slashes along her arms and legs and a painful expression lay on her lifeless face. She turned her head towards the mirror that read, your future sincerely, The Crimson Mace. Mya stepped back in horror. The Crimson Mace was the deadliest serial killer around. He was all over the news and he was wanted for over one million dollars.
“What is it?” numerous people asked as Lacey shut the door.
“Nothing, it’s nothing.” Tyler pushed the woman aside and made his way towards Lacey.
“Is everything alright?” he whispered.
“No, there’s been a murder.” She pulled him closer as his eyes grew wide. “The Crimson Mace is on our plane!”
“What?!” he shouted. Everyone stopped whispering for a moment as their eyes shifted to Lacey and Tyler.
“We’ve got to keep this quiet. Don’t say a word about this to the passengers. Go tell the captain what’s going on and I’ll handle damage control.” He nodded and made his way through the captain.
“What’s just happened?” ask the elderly lady that had been sleeping before.
“Nothing that we can’t handle, Mam.” Lacey said as she made a pathetic attempt to calm the passengers down.
“Honey, we’re not stupid. Something is obviously going on, and we’d appreciate it if you’d tell us the truth.”
“Lacey, come, now!” Erica said from behind the curtain. Lacey, thankful that Erica had called her away from the mob made her way to the back of the plane. “What’s going on? People are going crazy talking about a murder? Is this true?”
“Yeah, it is. There’s a dead woman in the bathroom. And there’s a message on the wall written in soap…it says ‘your future sincerely, The Crimson Mace.’”
“The Crimson Mace! Are you serous? He can’t be on here…He can’t! We’re doomed, we’re all doomed!” Erica shouted out. Lacey tried to quiet her down, but she was hysterical. All of coach heard this and began crying out and squirming in their seats. People began running around coach screaming in terror.
“Please, everyone, we need to remain calm!” Lacey shouted hopelessly. Even the staff was panic-stricken. Just then Tyler made his way threw the people and back to Lacey.
“What’s going on?” he asked her as a woman’s purse smashed into his arm.
“Everyone’s found out about the murder and who was behind it.” Lacey shouted over the screaming. “What do we do now? There’s sure to be more deaths if we’re unorganized. We need to organize ourselves otherwise it’ll be easy for The Crimson Mace to take someone somewhere else and kill them.”
“Well I’ve told the captain what’s going on and he should be making an announcement soon.” There was static for a moment and then a deep voice came over the loud speaker.
“Good evening ladies and gentlemen may I please ask you to quiet down.” Everyone became silent, not sure as to who was speaking. “This is your captain speaking. I am very sorry to report that the rumors circulating are true. There has been a murder in the ladies bathroom by no other than The Crimson Mace. Unfortunately this means that he is onboard this flight. Because we are now flying over the middle of the ocean we will be unable to have an emergency landing, and even if we were able to, we would have no means of identifying him since we have no idea what he looks like. What I ask of you is to remain calm so that we can take a count of who is here and who is missing. Maybe that will help us to identify this masked murderer.” It became silent again and the people began to panic again.
“Ladies and gentlemen did you hear the captain?” Tyler asked as he stepped out from behind the curtain. Please remain calm. We are going to take a head count so please remain seated. We’re here to protect you. Nothing else will happen to you. Just then a body came down from the ceiling. The girl was dangling down from a wire with a sign that read I live for fear – The Crimson Mace. Her eyes were wide open and fear was written all over her face. She had gashes all over her body and blood trickled down her face. People began to scream and the same disorganization that had just been resolved came about again. People leaped out of their seats and ran toward us at the back of the plane.
“LADIES AND GENTLEMEN SIT DOWN NOW!” Lacey screamed as the passengers slowly began to back away.
“Well that’s one way of handling things.” Tyler said trying not to laugh. Lacey glared at him for a moment and then returned her gaze to the passengers who stared at her from their seats.
“Look, I know this must seem really scary, but we must remain in a right state of mind. We can’t panic, that’s what he wants. If everything’s crazy then it will be easier for him to take another victim. Now please stay seated while we take a head count.” Flight attendants patrolled the aisles for a half hour figuring out who was there and who was missing. Everyone was there except for those who had been murdered.
“This doesn’t make any sense,” Tyler said to Lacey. “Everyone’s here. There’s only two people missing and those are the people who were killed.”
“Whoever this person is, they’re awfully sneaky.” Lacey said with a sigh.
“I’m happy you’re remaining calm. Everyone else is loopy right now. They’re all hysterical in the lounge. I’m happy I have you to talk to.” Tyler said with a smile. She didn’t want to show it, but currently she was scared out of her mind, but she knew she had to stay calm for the passengers.
“I’m happy I have you, too.” she said and she smiled back at him
“Sir, I’m sorry you’ll have to take a seat.” Erica was saying to someone. Lacey peeled back the curtain to find the man she had served champagne to earlier.
“Miss, I’m sorry but I really have to go to the bathroom, and unless you want me to piss all over myself, then I suggest you let me go. I had a large glass of champagne before and I would really like to relieve myself.”
“Erica he did have champagne before. I served him his drink. Maybe if he was supervised, we could let him use the bathroom.”
“Fine, but if there’s another murder, don’t blame me.” Erica said as she pushed past me. The man walked to the bathroom and Lacey followed him to the bathroom door. She waited outside for about five minutes.
“Sir, are you okay in there?” Lacey asked as she knocked on the door. Everyone turned to face her curiously. “Sir?” she repeated as she knocked harder. She turned to the passengers who were all wide-eyed. She knew she couldn’t leave the door otherwise something might happen. She looked around the coach area helplessly. No one was in sight. She couldn’t cry help because then everyone would start to panic.
“What’s going on?” Tyler whispered. He had come out of nowhere.
“I think something’s happened in the bathroom. He’s not answering and it’s been a while…” Lacey began to trail off as Tyler slammed his body against the door trying to open it. He was a tall, muscular man. It only took him a few tries before he busted open the door. No one was there. There was no sign that he had even been in there. “That’s impossible…where could he have gone?” Lacey said searching every nook and cranny.
“I know…this is all very strange. We’re obviously dealing with a criminal mastermind, and that’s what scares me…” Tyler said as he examined the ceiling. Lacey looked up curiously, unsure of what he was looking at.
“What are you looking at?”
“Oh, I just got this crazy idea…”
“And?”
“Well, what if he used the vents? I mean, that one girl, she dangled from the ceiling, and now this other guy just vanishes out of the bathroom…I don’t know it just makes sense.” Lacey shut the door because there were too many people that were trying to listen in on their conversation. Lacey put the toilet seat down and stood on top of it.
“What are you doing?” he asked.
“Seeing if he’s using the vents.” She said as she pushed up a tile on the ceiling. “It works! Oh, Tyler, maybe you’re right!” she said as she tried to lift herself up. Tyler pulled her back.
“Are you crazy? What if this is a trap!”
“Well, it was your idea—”
“I didn’t say we should go up after him! What if the guy who went to the bathroom was The Crimson Mace? What then? You’ll just be another one of his victims!”
“I’ll be careful----”
“No, if anything, I’ll do it.”
“Oh, so you think you’ll be safe but you don’t think I’ll be safe. Is it because I’m a girl?” There was a pause.
“Well…no….I mean…All of his victims tonight were girls; you’re in danger!”
“Tyler, I promise I’ll be fine. I can take care of myself.” she said as she pushed up the tile again, but Tyler pulled her back. She turned to look at him, an annoyed expression on her face.
“I won’t let you go,” he said earnestly. His big brown eyes stared into her light blue eyes. “I can’t…”
“Tyler, if you care about me, you’ll let me go. I promise I’ll be fine, and quite honestly, I don’t think you’ll be able to fit though this small space. Now would you give me a hand.” she said as she tried to lift herself through the hole in the ceiling where the tile had been. He hesitated, and then lifted her up through the ceiling. She watched him as he picked up the tile. She stared into his eyes for a moment. “I promise I’ll be alright.” she said. He nodded and then placed the tile back in the ceiling. The vents were cold and dark. She crawled hopelessly for ten minutes, not knowing where she was going. Finally she saw light at the end of the tunnel. She hesitated as she neared the end. She didn’t know what she’d find. She took a deep breath as she was about to jump down onto the ground, but then she stopped, backed up a little and made sure that she wasn’t going to be seen. She stared down at the two men who were hovered over a woman that was tied up and on the ground. It was Erica.
“Please, no, don’t! Don’t hurt me!” Erica cried as a man pulled out a large knife. She recognized him. He was the man who had asked for the champagne.
“Oh, it won’t hurt…much!” he said with an evil grin. The other man smiled as well as he slowly untied her.
“You better not run!” he exclaimed as he shoved a piece of cardboard and a marker at her. She recognized him too. He had been the man that had been watching the movie. He had seemed so nice with his pearly white teeth and his wife… “I’m going to tell you what to write, and you better write it exactly as I say it!” he shouted at her. She nodded slowly. “Good. Now write this: You will lie under the water for an eternity sooner than you think.” he said. Erica’s hand shook as she wrote this. “I can barely read this!” he said angrily. He threw the sign against the wall and slapped her across the face. She began to cry.
“Oh I’ll give you something to cry about!” The other man said angrily as he took the dagger and dragged it across her skin. She yelled in pain. Lacey put her hand against her mouth so she wouldn’t scream and backed away in horror. She couldn’t watch. She made her way precariously back to the bathroom tile, lifted it up, and jumped down onto an obese old man on the toilet. They both screamed and she jumped down off him.
“I’m so sorry!” she said awkwardly and she turned away from him. She opened the bathroom door and closed it. She walked to the back of the plane and pulled the curtain closed.
“Thank God, you’re alright!” Tyler said as he threw his arms around her. She didn’t hug him back, but just stared blankly into the distance. “Are you alright? You look like you’ve just seen a ghost!”
“Tyler, they’ve got Erica.” Lacey said, tears dripping down her face.
