Jay put the last of his clothes in the chest of drawers, making sure to save the last two drawers for his roommate, whoever that would be, and flopped down on the bottom bunk. He wondered if Jake would be out there. He figured Jake had gotten the picture when he'd locked himself in his room that he didn't feel like talking just that moment. Then again, he could take it as a sign of hostility. He hadn't thought of that before.
Even more depressed now, if that was possible, Jake got up and walked over the tiny at the back of the room (the one on the left side just gave him a dreary view of the street, the front gate, and the guards booth, where the guard had moved on from his tabloids to dirty magazines). There were a lot more arrivals now, and most of the ones he could see were casually loitering about an open patch of green behind his dorm building. The ease he saw in most of them suggested that the majority of them knew each other from before, and were definitely not first years.
A few of them were looking at a couple of girls walking on one of the stone paths that cut through the green, and Jay could see why. One of them was none other than the girl with the neon-orange hair he'd seen earlier who'd bitten her lips, and he thought he could see that she was still dabbing at it occassionally. The other one was sort of a hispanic looking girl with a moptop of reddish hair, who Jay could tell was a motormouth even from a distance. They certainly made a pair.
Nothing particularly interesting to look at, Jay retreated from the window, and once again flopped down on the bed. He could check if Jake was gone, but if Jake saw him checking he would probably think it rude for him to duck back into his room upon seeing him (that is, if he didn't already think him as rude already for going into his room without introducing himself properly). He could take a walk on the grounds, if he was in the mood for that sort of thing. He could .... Jay was at a loss to think of anything else. He cursed his parents under his breath for sending him away to this godforsaken place, but it was without any real conviction, because he really couldn't blame them for sending him away. He had given them just cause to do so.

Deb smiled, she was home. Sure, this was her first year here, but she had already spent so mch time in this building it was a second home to her. Well, with her uncle being the band teacher and all, and she was extreamly close to her uncle.
"Deb! Glad to see you!" she could hear his voice from behind her.
"Hi Uncle Fred!" she smiled and waved at him as she pulled her few bags out from the trunk of her dads pickup.
"Here, if you must, Uncle Aben. Alright? need any help with the bags?" he asked her as she closed the back and her dad took off, without even a goodbye.
Deb wasn't even fazed. Some people were muttering about how rude he was, leaving his daughter without a simple goodbye. Even Mr. Aben wasn't fazed. They both knew Rodger well, the typical drunken idiot. He had been sober for a week, due to Debs pitiful pleading, so he could get here without killing her or getting majorly lost like he sometimes could. Which made him really mad at Deb, and she was doubting getting picked up by him for the Christmas holiday now.

Jake was starting to get bored. He had already read 1984, so he was starting to loose interest in the book already. what was more he wanted to go see if his friends were about. they never desturbed him in his room, unless the were his brother Johnny or it was urgent. he was about to get up and leave when some kid crashed into his room and fell flat on his back. jake looked at him curiously- no one did that… "hey man," grinned the boy. his was short, slightly, skinny, pale, with black out lining his eyes very thickly. he looked like he fitted the label of 'goth' excellently. except for his massive grin on his face. "sorry bout that- just gettin into-" "hey squirt!" yelled a deep angry voice, that jake recognised immediately, "get back here- the fun's just started." "oh craaaaap…" moanded the kid, "can I hide here?!" "is that justin?" asked jake, casually. "yeah," the kid made a face, "i'm not his favourite pers-" "there you- oh hey Jake," justin added as he came into the room, cautiously now he saw jake, "how's it hangin?" Jake raised an eye brow. justin annoyed him worse than anyone else he knew. he was shorter than jake, but alot wider and chunkier. he often acted like he ruled the roast and considered himself king of men and gift to women already. "not bad," nodded jake, putting his hand down to help up the skinny little kid, "why you chasing this squirt?" justin glared at the pale guy, who just puffed out his chest puttin his fists on his waist mockingly. jake chocked back a laugh. "coz he insulted me," justin spat. "naw," dismissed the kid, "i just told you the truth- if you can't handle it…" he trailed off shrugging. justin growled. "see what i mean!" he complained to jake, as usual, "the kid's too cocky. he needs to be taught a lesson." jake gave him a half grin. "nah, he's got guts. you let him be, he'll get far in this school." "Jake mate- list-" "no," jake's voice boomed, and he walked over to justin, just his height seemed to terrify the bloke, "you listen to me. the kid's safe, he's cool." justin swollowed hard. "ok," he squeeked, his voice high pitched for some reason, he coughed his voice back to normal, "i mean… yeah man, it's cool. safe yeah- i'll see you later. good to see ya again…" he trailed off under jake's glare and cleared off. jake sighed heavily and went back to sit on his bed. the kid was staring at him. "what?" he asked, not unkindly. "i had you down as a jock," he shrugged, "coz everyone's been talkin about you." "i'm a bit popular-" "dude! you practically rule the school!" Jake shrugged. he'd never liked that… he'd never understood how he'd gotten to that stage. he guessed it was because he was so tall, people way have thought him a little intimadating. "but you're not so bad," the pale kid shrugged, "i'm Seth," he added, holding out his boney hand. "jake," nodded jake. "i no," Seth was grinning again. jake didn't know seth at all- but the guy had a sense of fun and intirgue surrounding him.

Jay removed his ear from the door and pondered. He'd overheard everything that had happened in the common room just then. It sounded as if some friend of Jake's was going to pound some random guy, and Jake had stood up for him. Maybe he wasn't as bad as Jay imagined him to be.
Suspicious as he always was, Jay was too bored with the dreary room to stay any longer. His closet back at home was probably bigger than this shoebox, and no matter how wide you opened the windows the room would be overcast with dark corners and that musky, dusty smell. That Logan kid sounded like a stand up guy, and he had no evidence to the contrary but his own prejudices.
If only he weren't so damn monstrous.
Jay took a deep breath, and took the plunge. Feigning ignorance, he opened up his door and peeked into the common room. "What's all the fuss in here?"

Seth seemed to jump slightly at the new voice. he grinned insanely when he saw it was someone new. jake sighed and shook his and chuckled deep in his throat. he like seth, he seemed like a funny guy to have around. "hey," beamed seth, "nah, nothin much. justin the mindless jock descided he didn't like it when someone told him the truth, and jake here stood up for me," "i didn't do much," shrugged jake, looking at jay then looking at seth, then back at nothing again. if anyone was concentrating enough on his face, they would have seen a little colouration seeping into his olive skin. "didn't do much?!" laughed seth, "dude!" he turned to face jay again. "this guy save me from a serious beating."

"Well, that was nice of him," smiled Jay, extending his hand out to the pallid newcomer, who was a white as a sheet. "Jay Bowen."

"Oh, I'm a first year." Jay plodded over to the brown loveseat and flopped down. Small traces of dust billowed out, and for a second Jay was overcome with coughing. "Yep. First time here. And you, Jake?" Jay added.

(I figured they should be 13 or 14. Jay, having been held back twice. is 15, going on 16 this month, in his first year.)
"Cool. How old are you, anyway?" asked as casually as he could, trying to take a subtle tack at pointing out the obvious: that Jake probably dwarfed everyone on campus easily.

"You're fifteen?" Jay gasped slightly, incredulous at this. He forgot himself for a moment at this stunning bit of news. Jay was fifteen himself, sixteen in a week or two. He could even be older than this behemoth! Unbelievable. "No way!"
