What do you do to set up the proper environment for a good writing experience? I almost always do my writing on the computer, so I have WordPerfect 10 and FireFox open. In WP, I will have any notes, character sheets, or previous versions of whatever I am attempting to write. In FireFox, I usually have one tab for Merriam-Webster Online (thesaurus and dictionary close at hand) and any other things I may need to research on the internet, one tab for listening to lyric-less music, and one tab for the guild (though this is probably a bad idea because it's distracting ).

I need to be alone, and for it to be relatively quiet and dark. Soft music is nice, but never anything hard with good beats or anything because I'm prone to get distracted and start dancing.

It depends on what stage of the process I'm at. For the first ideas, I write in a notebook with a pen, and go outside or on the roof. But then I type it up on the computer and begin using things like Thesaurus and looking up things on the internet. I'm trying to write a sci-fi, my first, and I wasn't thinking about all the science that you need to know to properly do these sort of tales...

I just type--don't really need a certain environment.

My best environment for first drafts is in school, with pen and paper, in class. Somehow the half-ignoring the teacher is fuel to my plots...lol, can multitask very well and have gotten used to that. Otherwise I pick a desk with good light and write hardcopy the same. Computer is usually only for second drafts and organization (can you imagine if we had to keep manuscripts all hardcopy like they used to ?!), unless it is more handy at the moment. Wordless music is good for some times. Writing outside, when the weather is nice, is ideal.

Man, I used to LOVE to write outside. I've got a big, beautiful, wrap-around porch with my grandpa's old porch swing hanging from the ceiling and a bunch of rocking chairs here and there, and there are all kinds of gorgeous/aromatic trees and wildflowers and bushes in the sunny Oklahoma springtime. It was a wonderful environment for writing.
Then I got the neighbors from hell. But that's a story for another time. -_-

That sounds awesome untill the neighbors. The outside feels so much more full of potential than the inside place where maybe you write every day. The outside also brings the adjectives to you--you know, you're not in a air conditioned bubble, but the wind and the smells are powerful next to you so you tend to remember that those things exist in your story as well. This makes for better writing.

Exactly. It's kind of like my sig; it makes you speechless, so you have that much more to write! ;D
