1.) Do you read or write fanfiction? 1a.) If so, what fandom(s)? 1b.) Do you stay with established, canon events or divert from them? 2.) Is fanfic a good thing, or does it squander possible talent which could be used on original works? 3.) To what point can fanfic be used as "fans writing what they wish they could see/read in canon"? Please answer and discuss, if this topic is interesting at all. It is to me...Have no qualms about making links to your fan fic work if you want. Cy's Answers: I write enormous amounts of Star Wars fanfiction and have done one or two short stories for Digimon, Zoids (anime), Inkheart(book), and X-Men (movie). My reading proportion is generally the same and all of this is done mostly at fanfiction.net. I do some AU stuff and some canon, depending on the mood. Skipping to question 3, most of my AU stuff is something I'd want to see, and I think that that is a major motive for fanfic writers. It's not always a good thing either, because some of what people want to see should not be seen. My first big writing projects, the ones which revealed to me the course of my entire life (That's kinda scary, but considering that I'm going to be a literature major next year it is true), were fanfics, but then I moved on. I am still in the stage where I want to do fanfic, but have to let it go. I think it's something one must grow out of because it does, to put it bluntly, waste writing time.

1. Both, but more reading than writing. It's the best stuff in the world.
1a. Supernatural (tv show) and Thunderbirds (movie/tv show) are my main fandoms, but I'll do others depending on what I'm obsessed with at the time. For example, lately I've been going through ff.net's entire selection of Four Brothers ff (movie), I've done Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Inuyasha, CSI, various bands, almost anything.
1b. Well, it kind of depends on EXACTLY what you mean. I hate OCs, but I like other, author-created events, because it's not really fanfiction if you stick with exactly what was already happening in the fandom, if that makes sense. I like backstory ffs a lot and 'current' stuff as well. So, diverted stuff, I guess.
2. It is the BEST thing, for me. I'm much more likely to read ff than original fiction (I spend way more time on ff.net than on fictionpress). I like to read about characters I already know about rather than having to get to know them, if that makes sense. If people choose to put their talent into fanfiction rather than original fiction, good for them, and no one should tell them they're wasting it.
3. Oh, I don't know. It's all what the author wishes to see, and I don't see a problem with that.
In my opinion, it isn't a waste of time because what you want to write is what you want to write. You can't really force yourself to write something, right? So if you're feeling like a fanfiction, write one! It's still your talent coming out, even if it isn't your characters or your fandom.

1.) Do you read or write fanfiction? I read some, and I rarely write some. 1a.) If so, what fandom(s)? HP, X-Men. . . That's pretty much it. 1b.) Do you stay with established, canon events or divert from them? When I write, I do have a tendency to do OC stuff, and I like reading OC stuff sometimes because it gives the author more freedom to do a great story. I'm not one of those snobs who hates stuff that isn't totally canon. ( ) 2.) Is fanfic a good thing, or does it squander possible talent which could be used on original works? I think it's a good thing. For one, it can be very amusing for both readers and writers. For another, it is great practice for doing original works in the future. Most fanfiction I've found kind of sucks in the writing skills department, but I have read a couple of stories that I can tell were written by a truly great author who should go into other fields of writing someday (and many of them do). 3.) To what point can fanfic be used as "fans writing what they wish they could see/read in canon"? I don't quite understand the question.
