M'kay, I know there are fans of The Outsiders out there. (Come on, Angie, I know about you in particular!) So let's just discuss the movie and maybe the book if we get into it. I feel that this is important enough for its own thread, so...here it is.
I have recently watched the special extended version of the movie, and in my opinion, that should have been THE movie. The extended scenes that were added in should have been there in the first place! Okay, not going to rant, not going to rant...
Anyways.

I did feel that they left too much out of the movie that they could have put in or at least mentioned. Also, some things weren't elaborated on enough in places.

Absolutely!
The beginning just left SO much to be desired in the original! I mean, all of a sudden we're thrown into the story with no intro to the clash between the greasers and the Socs. I always felt that the scene with Ponyboy being jumped was VITAL to the story.
And in the extended version, they actually showed some of the trial, which was nice. In this edition, Soda ACTUALLY was in it! Yay Soda! He barely got a part in the original, did you notice? And did you hear what happened to him later on, way after the book ended?

Seriously. Dude, Soda is like one of the most prominent characters in the book, and he got like three lines in the movie! No, I didn't hear what happened to him. Was it in a book she later wrote or something? If so, I don't want to know until I read it.

I KNOW! Soda is a HUGE part of the whole thing and then they're all like 'Weeeeell...three lines should be good enough for him!' All of his major parts and stuff were cut out and only released in the extended version. Rob Lowe was actually a decent actor in that movie and his character needed more lines.
I don't think it's in a future book, but maybe. I just heard it somewhere when someone asked S.E. Hinton what happened to some of the characters later on (though not Johnny and Dally, obviously, but the others still). I only recall (vaguely) what happened to Ponyboy and Steve and I know pretty well what happened to Soda. No clue about the rest though.

Hmm, I'll do some research sometime because I think it's in another book (possibly Tex?), but if it isn't, you can tell me what happened.

Check out 'That Was Then, This is Now' too, I'm pretty sure that mentions the greasers from the Outsiders.

Um... *wants to comment but can't cuz she read the book five years ago and doesn't remember enough from it to compare it with the movie* Though I will say this: from what I remember from the book, Ponyboy seemed a lot more innocent in the movie (if you know what I mean). I remembered Johnny being the only innocent one, and that's why I liked him best (and subsequently why I cried when he died). *shrugs*

lol, no worries on that.
I have to disagree...Ponyboy knew a hard life, but so did Johnny. Neither were exactly innocent, though they were compared to all the other greasers. Johnny...he knew life was rough; why else would he talk frequently about killing himself? Plus the abuse from his parents...I dunno what I'm talking about *sigh*.

Sure ya do, honey. I don't remember him talking about killing himself, and I know he had a hard life, but I mean, when he killed the guy he was totally freaked out about it and couldn't believe he'd actually done that, and he hadn't meant to. If any of the others had done that they would have shrugged it off and gone on with their lives, no?

Yes, he did talk about killing himself a few times, actually.
And no one could be innocent in a life like those boys were forced to have.
Of course he freaked out about it, but does that mean he's totally innocent? He freaked out because he had never done anything that awful, sure, but I doubt it means he's an innocent person.
Also, I don't think all the other boys would have just shrugged it off. Dally, yeah, he might. But like Sodapop or Two Bit or Steve, I think they would have done at least a little bit of freaking out.
In other words, I just don't think "innocent" is the right word. There's a quality that they have that sets them apart, and it resembles innocence, but they've seen and done too much for them to be innocent.
So there's my two cents. ;D

Yep, he did. Even in the movie, in the vacant lot after being at the movies with the girls, he talks about it with Ponyboy.
I agree with Angie, mostly. I can't say many of the other boys would just shrug it off entirely- Ponyboy in particular. Steve probably would have killed someone if they were threatening Soda. Two-Bit, while being knowledgable of their hardships...I dunno. I don't think he would just shrug it off either. It's just so hard to say.
Dally more than likely would not care. I got the impression that he's probably killed a few times when he was in New York, with his whole 'gang' scene. He was just...too far gone. Never really innocent.
