My brother John, my mom, and I all think this movie is fascinating. I've never seen another movie quite like it.
It tells a very realistic story, in my opinion. It's mainly from the perspective of Gilbert, and you don't really like him a whole lot, especially at the beginning, but he does show his heart a lot at different moments; he is one of the most complex characters that you will find in a modern movie.
I have known families like his; they're more common than you would think. And it's uncanny how the town of Endora resembles the town I lived in until I was seven years old. It's not too different from the one I live in now, in fact. Part of that, I suppose, might be because it was shot in a little town in Texas, even though it was set in Iowa. This movie interests me greatly because it's like I'm getting a different insight into the lives of people I've known. Plus, there's never a dull moment in the film.
And to top it all off, Arnie's always got a funny comment to make you laugh off a bit of of the drama. ^_^
My dad made a comment about how Leonardo DiCaprio must have some great acting skills to be able to play a character like Arnie, and I quite agree. If you'll notice, there are a handful of fairly major actors in this movie, and they were toward the beginning of their success when it was made. That's not a coincidence, in my opinion, because this is certainly the perfect movie for an aspiring actor to showcase acting skills.
So yeah, if you haven't seen it, go rent it. Or buy it. Check the TV guide. Something. Just watch it.
