Yeah, it kind of bugs me how insufficient everyone's knowledge in grammar is, even high schoolers (I stopped learning grammar lessons entirely after 9th grade, myself). In fact, my friend Rachel is coming over Sunday to have me proofread her essay because she's horrible at doing punctuation and the like properly, even though she's in AP English like me.

I think people should learn grammar to an extent so that their writing makes sense but often when people try to be painfully grammatically "correct" their writing can suffer and sound stuffy. A certain amount of stylistic license needs to be used to make your writing unique. Stephen Fry, one of my favourite writers, wrote an article recently condemning the dogmatic adherence to grammar by some people where he called upon people to split their infinitives and suchlike if it makes their writing come alive.
