Outside Lucy stood with her back to the wall, a hat pulled low over her eyes, hoping the shadows would conceal her identity. She had been worried she had been late, till she spotted Alec walking down the stairs into the bar. She had grinned to herself, he had looked round, and even nodded at her, but he hadn’t recognised her; as far as she could tell. Evidently he wasn’t that careful, about women at least. Though having met Helena, he’d soon learn to be much more wary. Lucy watched as Alec lead Helena up the stairs. Helena’s face was stoney and thoughtful, but Lucy had known her long enough to know that was simply a face she put on when excitable; Helena was aware of her mobile face and had learned to use it to her advantage. If Helena was the journalist Lucy took her for, the frank indifference and thought on her features was put on as a mask. Lucy had half a mind to call out to her, to warn her off, and tell her she was stupid to go with the… person… this so-called Exacutioner. The other half, the more dominant half, her reporter’s side, told her to keep going, get the scoop, get the conclusion, find the story. It told her, rather cooly, that Helena was a grown woman, that she could look after herself; she wasn’t a child that needed her hand to be held. Alec kept glancing at Helena, but she didn’t say anything. She looked around the streets, shivering every so often. It was only twilight, but the streets of the city still spooked her. There seemed to be a seriel rapist loose in the city, Helena had been assigned to cover the story by interviewing the few survivers. In the past two months, there had been about ten victums and only three had lived, the other six had been raped, canabalised and left in the open spaces of Linsdale Park. Helena however wasn;t worred about Alec being a possible suspect, he didn’t fit the profile or even the sketchy description given by the victums. She studied his face. He wasn’t old… not that old anyway. He could have been in his early thirties, like she was, but at the same time, he could have been the same age as Luke, in his forties. Alec seemed almost timeless. “What?” asked Alec glancing at her. “Nothing,” shrugged Helena, looking away, “you just…” she shook her head, “nothing.” She couldn’t explain what she was thinking. It was Alec’s turn to study the woman walking next to him. He shook his head and looked away. They did not speak again after that, Helena lost in thought her eyes hooded with her musings. Alec with his hands stuffed into his pockets, face looking out towards the sky. Lucy following as quietly as she could behind them, putting all her concentration into not loosing the pair in front of her, and keeping quiet. She didn’t want things to turn ugly. Twenty minutes later, Alec stopped suddenly. “Uh… Helena…” he started, glancning at his companion. “Yes?” “I think someone’s following us…” “Oh?” she didn’t turn round to check, that would be a most rediculous thing to do. “Can we loose them?” “Well…” he started, “probably. For a while at least… though maybe not the whole time…” “Hummm,” considered Helena for a moment, “lead the way, Van Helsing.” “I wish you would call me Alec,” he muttered, as he started off again, still at the same pace as before, however he had his mobile out, “hey, Jake, s’up man?” “You sound like a teenager… act your age,” muttered Helena darkly. He looked at her side ways, but ignored the comment. “We got a slight problem… nah nothing like that… we haven’t seen her for months, remember… Moron…” After that Helena propmtly lost interesting having no idea what the conversation was about. He was speaking in low whispers and mutterings, so he wouldn’t be over heard. Unfortunetly, it meant it sounded like a low buzzing in her ears which really was starting to tick her off. When he was finished he had a grin on his face. “Change of plan, Miss Thompson-” “I said call me Helena.” “Then call me Alec,” he retorted, and carried on, “how are you for dancing skills?” She raised her eye brows. “Is that a trick question?” not really caring how cliché she sounded. He just laughed, and grabbed her hand, pulling her faster a long the street. He was moving so fast by then, it was all Helena could do to keep up, she was never one who liked going to the gym. Lucy on the other hand was a health freak, and consequently a very good athlete. She was aware of how fast she and the people she was following were going, how ever, it wasn’t that much of a big deal for her to follow. They headed further down town, still keeping central. It would have been easier and faster to take a train or bus, but this Alec person seemed to like to keep to the shadows. It was half an hour before they reached the wanted district. And by then, Lucy was severely confused. The place was bright, filled with people, loud, noisie. Not nessicarily, filled with the sorts that you would want to associate with, but there were many people none the less. Lucy had him down as a mercinary or assassin of some kind, but a killing here would be too public. She contined to be confused untill a gun shot rang out. Her automatic response was to look around and locate the place where the gun shot had come from, but looking round she noticed barely any of the other people there had taken any notice of the sound, almost as though it was normal. Not surprising, rationalised Lucy taking in her surroundings more clearly. Down town this far was infamous for being a high crime area and more than that; it was well known for it’s gang wars and worse for the gun culture. It was not a place to be on your own at night. Scowling to herself and catching up a bit more with Alec and Helena, Lucy’s mistrust deepened. The problem was, the two were getting further and further away, and that was simply because of the ammount of people in the area. Just when she thought she’d loose them, they stopped moving. They had joined a que to go into a building. Lucy stopped too, and waited untill a few more people had joined them in the que before latching onto the end herself. Looking round, she saw that most of them men, though there were a fair few women. The women were dressed scantily, in high boots, ripped fishnets, big hair and fake jewllery almost blinding her- most of it fake gold. At least it looked fake… she was not an expert. The men were either dressed in baggy jeans and hoodies, their hands down the front of their pants, in their hoodie pockets or round on the the half naked women. The others dressed in suits were looking round rather nervously, like they didn’t want to be recognised by any one. The suits with arms round two or three women, were decorated with more jewlery than that in a jewlers shop. ‘Stripe club?’ she wandered, looking up at the building, ‘club in general?’ she shudded, she wasn’t sure she wanted to go inside. Another gun shot was heard, she jumped sightly. Mentally she shook her head. She wasn’t about to let her self get spooked that easily- it wasn’t the first time she had come to a strip joint to find out something for a story. She would be fine. “What is this place?” asked Helena, looking around at the people standing round her, finding herself pressing closer to Alec without even meaning to. The sounds of guns was worrying her, and the looks of then men around was starting to annoy her, even if they weren’t directed at her. “Gold-digger,” explained Alec, looking round, as if looking for someone, his green eyes scanning the faces of those around, “it’s a supposedly gangster hang out place.” He felt Helena come closer to him, he looked down at her. He didn’t know whether to laugh and tease her or tell her nicely that everything would be fine. Instead of either, he put his arm round her shoulders, and pulled her closer. “Don’t worry, I won’t let anything touch you.” She looked up at him with raised eye brows. “You are.” “Are what?” “Touching me.” He stared at her then started laughing, but didn’t remove his arm. People backed away from the two of them thinking they were together. They were safer like that any day or night. “I’m serious,” she muttered, half wanting to move away, the other half knowing it was too dangerous too. Whether he was telling the truth about vampires and demons or not. It wasn’t long before they reached the bouncer to come in. Helena looked up at him, almost worriedly. He was a stereotypical bouncer, bald, black and very bulky. In his smart suit, dark glasses and ear piece, Helena didn’t think she had ever felt so worried as to what someone could do to a person. “Hey Gaz,” grinned Alec, greeting the huge man in front of them. ‘Gaz’ looked down, and a grin broke out on his face as he took off his unless sunglasses revealing surprsingly blue eyes. “Alec, ma man! How you doin’!” he spoke in a very down town, New York accent, “who’s the priddy lady!” Helena found herself blushing slightly as she replied, “Helena Thompson.” The bouncer blinked in surprise. “I know yoo! Well… at least I heard of yoo anyway. Yoo the one who busted the people tracifing deal didn’t yoo?!” Helena chuckled, relaxing slightly. “Yeah,” she admitted, “the police weren’t doing much about it.” Gaz chuckled. “The fuzz ain’t got no idea about this kinda thing. It’s all fancy pants and targets with them. They don’t give a shit.” “You sound like you know a lot,” started Helena. “You have no idea missy,” winked Gaz, “hey Alec, wa’choo doin back here anyway?” “We got another runner,” said Alec dryly, “trail lead straight here.” Gaz scowled. “Gonna deal with him.” Alec’s smile was cruel and twisted. “It’s what I do best.” Helena shivvered slightly as the men laughed, and tocuhed fist (a tradition she never truly understood). “You’re in for a good show, Miss Thompson,” Gaz told her, “Alec is theee best!” “It’s Helena, please,” Helena told him, “and he’s mentioned that before.” “Ah… he ain’t shy for a reason,” Gaz beamed at his friend, “you two get in, I’ll catch yas later.” He removed the line barring their way in, and allowed them through. “And he is?” “A demon,” said Alec simply leading her down the stairs. “What?!” she yelped. He started laughing. “A demon. Well, defence soldier demon,” Alec elaborated, “they used to be summoned to help protect some where. They’re natural form is big, but they can shrink it down, it’s their… well their magic that makes it impossible for them to shrink down to my size, so most of them tend to like the more muscular human forms.” “Why not the fat ones? Don’t they get it off easier? Fit in more.” “Ah, but you forget- I did say defence solider demon right?” Helena nodded. “Well that’s their entire reason for being; defence. Being fatter tends to mean their bodies aren’t as well adapted for protecting and defence. Being muscular allows them to carry on their job. When they come to the human world they tend to become bouncers, mostly because it’s lower profile and a lot more fun than being in the millitery or something. All night creatures are like that, they like their fun.” He looked at Helena. “They’re not a bad lot… and Gaz is one of the best.” “I guessed…” she said dryly, not ready to believe him just yet. Alec looked at her. “Don’t believe me?” “No.” “Oh you will…” he smirked at her, and tugged her into the hot, dark, sweaty room known as Gold-digger. Claustrophobia already closed in on Helena fast with all the moving body around them. She felt trapped, her only life line was the large hand with a grip on hers. She held on tight, feeling about ten years old again, not wanting to get lost in a crowd of people. She didn’t know what she would do then. Lucy finally arrived at the bouncer. He looked her over and shook his head. “No way missy,” he said darkly. “What?!” she exclaimed, she had gotten this far, she wasn’t about to get stopped just then. “We have too many people as it is untill the open up the upper area,” was all he said, “you’re going to have to wait.” He heart was pounding in her chest, the longer she waited, the longer it it would take her to find them again, and she knew how crowded places like that got. “Couldn’t you at least let one more in?!” she pleaded, “I have my friends in there.” “Your friends will know the deal,” said the bouncer, coldly, “you’ll just have to wait. It’ll be half an hour at the most.” Half an hour… half an hour… thirty minutes… she knew all too well what could happen in half an hour! What if she missed it! What if she missed everything! But the bouncer had turned his back on her and was trying to sort out something with the person on the other end of his ear piece. There was litterally nothing Lucy could do for the moment, but wait untill a window of opportunity arose… until then she’d have to wait and let her heart keep pounding in her chest like a bass drum.
